Avoid the Financial Pain of Traveling without Travel Medical Insurance!

Author: Ken Vandiver

An acquaintance of mine took a trip with his family last year and didn't buy a Travel Medical Insurance policy because his credit card had a travel insurance feature. He thought he was covered if anything happened on his trip. Boy was he wrong! A few days into their vacation my friend had an acute appendicitis attack and had to be hospitalized, problem was they were no where near a decent facility. He had to be taken to a hospital a few hundred miles away and since it was an emergency it had to be by helicopter to him there in time.

He found out that his "credit card insurance" covered none of this so he had to pay for it out of his own pocket (read credit card). To make a long story short he is fine now but he and his wife are still paying off the credit card balance for the emergency and will be for probably two more years.

How could he have avoided the financial pain of his appendicitis attack? Actually it would have been really easy, he could have bought a Travel Medical Insurance policy to protect him and his family during their two week vacation. A good policy could have been purchased for about $70.00, with a $0 deductible and a $500,000 policy maximum, which would have covered him, his wife and child. His out of pocket expense would have been zero.

What would a good Travel Medical Insurance policy cover? Just about everything, but it definitely would have covered his illness and transportation to a good medical facility. They would have been covered for his initial examination, the medical evacuation to an appropriate medical facility including the medical personnel who accompanied him, his wife and small childs transportation to the same location and his surgery and hospital stay.

How could that be, how could a $70.00 Travel Medical Insurance policy cover all of that? Well a good policy includes all of this: selectable deductible and plan maximum, coinsurance, hospital room and board, intensive care, medical expenses,  outpatient medical, prescription drugs, local ambulance, emergency illness with and without in-patient admission, emergency room accident, dental, emergency medical evacuation, return of mortal remains, return of minor children, emergency reunion, political evacuation, basic sports and activities coverage, terrorism coverage, identity theft assistance, common carrier accidental death, natural disaster benefits and trip interruption

The financial pain my friend is suffering, is the pain of having to pay all of the costs for his appendicitis attack. It ran into the thousands of dollars, fortunately it didn't cost the $15,000 to $18,000 for the surgery that it would have cost in the U.S. but it did cost him over $10,000 total. He is really angry at himself that he didn't pay the $70.00 for the Travel Medical Insurance policy, but as he said he didn't want to spend the extra money because he was sure that nothing would happen on their vacation.

So if my friend would have purchased a good Travel Medical Insurance policy would he be suffering from financial pain right now, of course not, he would very probably be congratulating himself on being smart enough to get the insurance protection he and his family really did need and deserve.

So if you want to avoid the same pain, be sure to get a good Travel Medical Insurance policy to cover yourself and your family when you travel or go on vacation. You can find out how to get your travel insurance on-line at http://www.globaltravelcoverage.com or contact the agent there using their contact form.
